Poland will not tolerate violation of Georgian border: official

Violation of Georgia’s borders will not be tolerated by Poland, which Tbilisi could count on as a future UN security council member, Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski has said.

Waszczykowski spoke during a visit to Georgia where he met Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallström, who echoed the Polish official’s sentiments, and Georgian Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze.

Poland is set to serve as a temporary member of the UN security council in 2018-2019.

Waszczykowski also said that a summit of the Eastern Partnership on 24 November would maintain its offer of ever closer Georgian-European Union ties.

The Eastern Partnership, an initiative by Poland and Sweden, was launched in 2009 to forge closer political and economic ties between the EU and its eastern neighbours.

Waszczykowski said: “Of course we would prefer to offer you prospective full European Union membership … but that it not possible right now,” adding that the bloc was in a “complicated” situation.

Waszczykowski also said the European Union appreciated Georgian reform efforts which would make the country “more similar to member states".

Wallström pointed to Georgian successes in the fight against corruption. She said she expected more progress on judicial reform, political equality, and freedom of the press, and that she hoped deals to bring Georgia closer to the single market would be signed.

In August 2008, a war erupted between Georgia and Russia when Tbilisi tried to regain South Ossetia, which broke away in the 1990s and became independent with help from Moscow.

While in Georgia, Waszczykowski and Wallström were scheduled to visit the regional field office in Mtskheta, eastern Georgia, of the European Union’s Monitoring Mission which oversees regional stability. (vb)

It was striking that everywhere I went there were EU flags in Tbilisi... And they are not candidate country yet, I believe. Anyways, it would be great if Georgia becomes more westernized. EU needs friends in that region

I was there 2 weeks ago. You have great churches, I like the old town and the old architecture as a whole. I didn't like these ultra modern buildings although they were nicely done and kind of suited the other buildings...

The largest refugee group in Poland are people from the former Soviet Union; each year since 2000 this group forms between 40–90% of the individuals applying for refugee in Poland; out of those, the largest group are the Chechens, who started applying for it at the start of the 21st century, following the Chechen Civil War. It is estimated there may be about 20,000 Chechens in Poland as of mid-2010s. The second largest group are the Ukrainians, who started applying for that status following the Ukrainian-Russian conflict; approximately 1,000 to 2,000 or more Ukrainians have been applying for the stay in Poland since the onset of that conflict.Third largest group from that region applying for stay in Poland are people from Georgia.

I see you like old architecture even by you avatar^^ Most of Georgians don't like those modern buildings near old ones as well.Our architecture is very mixed,almost every style can be seen here especially in Tbilisi.
