Some pictures of my hometown in Brazil, Curitiba. The European heritage in the city and state in general is far less German and Dutch but more Italian and Slav, mainly Ukranian and Polish. Other distinct ethnicities are Japanese, Lebanese and Syrian. The more "Brazilian" ethnicities are Paraná-born people from the countryside, people from São Paulo state and people from Bahia state.

    Lovely pictures, Token and others!

Interesting that people here include states like Minas Gerais, Espirito Santo or Rio de Janeiro as part of a region that is the only one that could be considered "Western", aren't MG and RJ basicaly extentions of the Northeast with maybe a slight more Euro input?

I've read that the Center-West (Mato Grosso, Goiás....) is very Colonial Portuguese.

No. Minas Gerais is basically Colonial Portuguese with few Italians + Pardos and Blacks, but many of the ''whites'' there are full or nearly full European. Espírito Santo have many recent European settlers and like Rio and Minas Gerais many regions are predominantly White. These three states are kinda transitional between ''Pardo'' Brazil and ''White'' Brazil. They can vary depending on the region, but they are significantly more Euro than the Northeast. Rio is only very Black in the capital city and surrounding areas, the rest of the state is less africanized. Minas Gerais is predominantly White in the South and mixed-tri-racial in the North, it's like a microcosm of Brazil.

    Thanks.
Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo are oficially part of the southeast region, together with São Paulo, that yes, is mostly a geopolitical division, but is also characterized by a distinct culture, vegetation and even climate. Center-West and even the Northeast have a lot of colonial Portuguese influence but they were so much influenced by indigenous and African culture and this is visible in toponym, dialectal variations, folklore and even genetics. In a genetic sense, the most European region of Brazil is the South followed by the Southeast and then the Center-West and those north of them. The recent European migrations certainly played a role in the cultural 'Europeanization' of the south (in the broader sense, including the southeast, like we are using in this thread), Italians that visit Brazil says that they feel at home in São Paulo, specially the non-metropolitan regions, and the same is true for Germans in the south.
