I tend to view it as there is southern Italy which is defined by Calabria/Sicily and then there are Apulians who are basically transplanted Greeks so of course they look Greek. I know this is not entirely based in fact, but it has some merit behind it.

They don't, in spite of some cretan settlements there. Most of them are pretty native, and there is even a colony of kythera, with most of the people having surnames from there
