Have you tried Family Search? If you know your town(s) of origin in Europe, you may be able to find some good record collections there. I've had a lot of luck searching by town on that site.

Since my OP and one follow-up to that I had some most amazing breakthrough with my genealogy research. Basically on my father's side I'm still stuck as I was before, but on my mother's side I managed to totally go way-way back in time into even the Early Middle Ages, as she is quarter Donauschwaben, and managed to trace this lineage back to Western Europe where they were descendants of some minor Late Medieval aristocrats, thus from here, with some careful research through the databases on Geni, Geneanet and MyHeritage, I managed to find direct links with many European royal dynasties, dukedoms and so on.
