I though affirmative action was banned, particularly in the case of the University of California system, in 1996 via Proposition 209.

LOL it's supposed to be banned but if it was then why are so many lower performing groups admitted at the expense of Asians and INdians with 4.5 GPAs and perfect SAT scores?

But irrelevant to me either way, I'd still prefer attending a mid tier school like UC Davis or Cal Poly over UC Berkeley or Stanford, looking in hindsight. Students at these schools are more down to earth, and the engineering schools are still very good.

This is not true. It is hard for anyone to get accepted to those schools, regardless of their race. They don't just accept black students with mediocre GPAs.
