On a whole range of issues - guns, welfare, religion, taxation, the death penalty - the US is very different from most other developed countries. Not only compared to Western Europe but also Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Even Japan and South Korea are closer to European norms on most of those issues than the US is. Why is this? What has led the US to diverge so much from much of the developed world on these sorts of issues?
