Fair enough. However I was in fact hoping there'd be somebody around who had read these authors before.

China Miéville is a Socialist prick who has the nerve to criticise Tolkien's place in fantasy-fiction. I'm all for authors branching out, being influenced by one another and trying something new.. but Miéville is trying to recreate the genre in his image and lambasting anyone who tries to take it in another route.

Sawyer writes science fiction so I don't have much to say there and Priest scares me.

Oooh, after reading that last night I got excited, and read half of Boneshaker. But I failed to see why she would scare you?

It's a pretty standard zombie/steampunk story -- very entertaining, but also very predictable.

There's nothing terribly morbid, or perverse, or transgressive about it, nor does the author display the kind of all-encompassing single-mindedness I had hoped for.

Yesterday I had two cavities filled without any anesthetic, which was a first (and wasn’t bad at all, actually).

Sawyer has become popular recently because the sci-fi serial "Flashforward" is based on his book, although with some major plot changes and of course focusing on character's relationships and such
However, in the book he manages subjects like world interpretations vs. TI, the physics of immortality, Minkowski's cube, Ebenezer effect, with elegance and intelligence. Worth the read.
I think you would enjoy "Calculating God".
    Ditto on Miéville @ Murphy.
And I am not familiar with Priest's work, so no opinion.
