Being I a great gothic-romances supporter I must agree with you. Scapigliatura is the only true Italian romanticism, especially "Fosca" of Iginio Ugo Tarchetti. It's a pity that until Scapigliatura, Romanticism in Italy has always been remained too linked to the classicism. Manzoni, in my opinion, can't absolutely being considered "romantic" if under "Romanticism" we include the German and the English ones. While Scapigliatura has the same "Ossianic" spirit and darkness. I see something gruesome also in "Il Nome Della Rosa": medieval atmosphere, a monastery sarrounded by the fog in the heart of the Alps and various murders, the fair of the Evil. Very romantic. up

I'm also a fan of dark gothic romances such as The monk,Dracula,Melmoth the wanderer ,The castle of Otranto and many more..in Italy this kind of romance has never been practiced or only a few authors have done it,Tarchetti as you mentioned,Arrigo Boito and some others not well known..Umberto Eco is a great semiologist who tried to make money (not a bad thing) with what his political formation always hated,esoterism,mysticism,occultism and so on..i prefer his latest work,il cimitero di Praga,heavily influenced by Meyrink and jewish occultism et cetera...The fact that we don't have a ossianic literature is due,in my opinion,to the attitude sunny attitude towards life and political issues such as Risorgimento.

No possiamo parlare pure italiano qui. Penso più che altro che l'assenza del romanzo gotico dipenda dal classicismo esagerato a mio avviso di cui è impregnata la letteratura italiana e soprattutto dal fatto che in Italia, dal Manzoni in poi, si è sempre fatta letteratura politicamente impegnata, ancorata al Verismo (due palle), mentre la letteratura fantastica, che pure è stata parte importantissima del nostro Medioevo e del Rinascimento ultimamente sembra essersi arrestata (eccezion fatta per Elsa Morante, anche se il suo genere non può dirsi fantastico).
Ci sono delle eccezioni come il Futurismo e il Surrealismo, ma non è un caso che l'unico surrealista degno di nota sia stato un triestino.
Non penso che si tratti solamente di un approccio diverso alla vita da parte di noi Latini. Gli Scapigliati ne sono un esempio.
Il problema è "il vero per oggetto, l'utile per scopo e l'interessante per mezzo".
Se si prende invece un americano come Edgar Allan Poe, che per me è il più grande scrittore gotico mai nato, beh lui abbandona sia il vero che l'utile e si concentra sull'interessante. In fin dei conti alcuni suoi racconti sono anche utili, come per esempio "L'Uomo della Folla" (the Man of the Crowd) rappresenta ottimamente e senza troppe parole l'alienazione moderna del soggetto all'interno dei grandi spazi urbani.

Insomma, odio Manzoni per 30000 motivi.

In realtà il classicismo ha avuto nemici temibilissimi sin dai tempi di Macchiavelli,gli stessi umanisti tanto decantati erano dei grandi lettori dei classici,ma non solo di Platone e Aristotele..che poi hanno messo le basi di tutta la letteratura seguente..Io sono grande estimatore del genere maccheronico che si è esplicitato sopratutto o quasi solamente nel centro nord Italia e sino ad oggi è stato l'oppositore più ostinato a certa letteratura iperuranica..sul fatto che da noi non sia nato un vero e proprio filone romantico,ad eccezzione di Manzoni che anche a me non piace per niente,anche se gli vedo certe sfumature sadiane.,non saprei dire,la letteratura in merito tira fuori parecchie possibili cause,tutte più o meno valide,personalmente ritengo che l'aspetto antropologico/climatico abbia fatto molto in questo senso.
