Brave, A Blockchain-Based Browser Offers New Way To Pay Content Creators
By Eric Brackett
Brave, a block-chain based browser, raised $35 million this year and is now on the market and hoping to build a new ecosystem that benefits content creators and consumers alike.
The major selling point of Brave is its use of Basic Attention Token, a new form of cryptocurrency, which it helps will allow users to reward the creators they enjoy while making ads less frustrating and more relevant to their interests. Starting this week, Brave will begin distributing BAT to its users. It plans to give out about $60,000 worth or 300,000 BAT tokens. Normally users can earn BAT simply by using Brave, but this promotion should give them additional tokens which they can then use to reward creators they enjoy.
Over the course of the month, users will get an additional $5 worth of BAT. These coins will be added to their Brave payment wallet and can then be used to provide “tips” to various websites and YouTube channels they visit.
The wallet’s default setting base’s the tip amount based on how long a user spends at a Brave-verified website. However, these settings can be changed allowing users to give whatever tip amount they would like.
The plan is for users to start giving tips to the content creators they enjoy allowing the content creators to rely less on adds as BAT can be converted into dollars or other forms of fiat currency.
Brave CEO Brendan Eich told Tech Crunch that Brave is hopeful that this system will serve as a way to cut out the middle-man and make the internet better for everyone.
“It is one of many steps toward dealing users back in for a fair deal, and dealing out the toxic middle players,” Eich said. “We are moving from good-will contributions to user grants to private ads that share the bulk of the gross ad revenue with the user, without any targeting or tracking by remote parties (including Brave.)”
The Brave browser is currently already on the market though its full functionality will be improved over time. YouTube payment options were just added over the last two months, for example.
