Having listened today to President Erdogan speak to the Organisation of Islamic States, accusing Israel of various crimes against the Palestinians, the irony struck me that if you replaced the word 'Palestinians' with 'Kurds' then you could mostly say the same thing about Turkey itself. More generally, this is an interesting comparison, since (a) these two countries are the only two electoral democracies in the Middle East, (b) despite that, their human rights records still leave a LOT to be desired and (c) their human rights violations are linked at least in part to racism and OWD. So, taking into account not just the (mis)treatment of Palestinians and Kurds, but also other aspects such as freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, fair trials, freedom of the press etc, which of the two countries is worse?
