I think the study is missing the most obvious reason why it's likely.
Smart Hobbies: Computers, lab work, reading, learning.
Average/Dumb Hobbies: Sports, "hanging out", shopping, bars.
The hardest thing for intelligent people is the fact that most intelligent people's hobbies just aren't as social.

It's not difficult being social. It's knowing basic social cues and avoiding topics you know upsets people. It's incredibly boring.

That is a fallacy. You can't say clever people like this and stupid people like that. Personality and interest has little to do with IQ.
Look at this forum. Anthropology and genetics could be considered "intelligent" topics, yet there are some people here I wouldn't trust to make me a cup of tea for fear it would strain their intellect too much. Then I have another Mensa friend, highly intelligent, who lives for trance parties, pops hallucinogenics every second night and chugs down 20 liters of beer over the course of a weekend.
You get highly social people who are extremely intelligent, and you get highly unsocial people who are as dumb as dogshit.
It varies from person to person.
I used to be the life of the party until I became... or changed... or morphed into what I am today. There was nothing more interesting than getting to know people, what interested them, what makes them tick... After a couple years I started hearing the same stories in the pubs over and over again. There is always the guy whose wife is giving him hell, there is always the guy who has apparently made millions only to be screwed over in a terrible business deal, the guy who tells everyone he's a pilot (when in reality he's an estate agent). It's the same sob story every time, just different people telling it. That's when I called bullshit. I don't need to waste my time sitting somewhere and know exactly what story you are going to lay out in front of me before you even start talking.
These days I prefer my own company.
