Default Dolores O’Riordan, Lead Singer Of Multi-Platinum Irish Rock Band 'The Cranberries' Died Suddenly

Cranberries singer Dolores O'Riordan dies aged 46

Irish singer, whose band has sold more than 40m records, died suddenly in London, her publicist says

Dolores O’Riordan, the lead singer with the multi-platinum band the Cranberries, has died aged 46.

The news was confirmed by her publicist in a statement, but no cause of death has yet been announced. O’Riordan, who had to cancel a tour with a reunited Cranberries in 2017 due to a back problem, had been in London for a recording session.

The statement described the death as “sudden”, and added: “Family members are devastated to hear the breaking news and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”

Irish president Michael D Higgins said he learned of the news with “great sadness”, adding: “To all those who follow and support Irish music, Irish musicians and the performing arts, her death will be a big loss.”

Musicians have started to pay tribute, including Irish songwriter Hozier, who said he was “shocked and saddened”, and that O’Riordan’s voice “threw into question what a voice could sound like in that context of rock. I’d never heard somebody use their instrument in that way.”

Only last week I was wondering which star would die soon as each January somebody great seems to die.

She was one of my favourite vocalists and I've always liked The Cranberries. R.I.P.

My favourite song by The Cranberries (Daffodil Lament.)

Dolores had such a breathtaking singing voice.

R.I.P. to one of Ireland's most talented and popular singers and creative artists. A very sad and tragic loss.

Dolores O'Riordan: IRA bomb victim's father pays tribute to Cranberries star

Colin Parry's 12-year-old son, Tim, was killed in an IRA bomb in 1993

The father of one of the Warrington bomb victims has paid tribute to the Irish musician, Dolores O'Riordan.

The lead singer of The Cranberries died on Monday, aged 46.

Colin Parry's 12-year-old son, Tim, was killed alongside three-year-old, Johnathan Ball, in 1993 when two IRA bombs detonated in Cheshire.

The Cranberries recorded the single Zombie in 1994 in memory of the two boys.

Mr Parry told BBC's Good Morning Ulster programme he had been touched by the lyrics but had not known their significance until after the singer's death.

Jonathan Ball, three, and Tim Parry, 12, died after the IRA bombing

"Only yesterday did I discover that her group, or she herself, had composed the song in memory of the event in Warrington in Cheshire, England," he said.

"I was completely unaware what it was about.

"My wife came home from the police centre where she worked yesterday and told me the news.

"I got the song up on my laptop, watched the band singing, saw Dolores and listened to the words.

Some lyrics from the 1994 single 'Zombie'

    Another head hangs lowly
    Child is slowly taken
And the violence, caused such silence
    Who are we mistaken?
But you see, it's not me
    It's not my family
In your head, in your head, they are fighting
With their tanks, and their bombs
And their bombs, and their guns
In your head, in your head they are crying

    'Powerful'

"The words are both majestic and also very real.

"The event at Warrington, like the many events that happened all over Ireland and Great Britain, affected families in a very real way and many people have become immune to the pain and suffering that so many people experienced during that armed campaign.

"To read the words written by an Irish band in such compelling way was very, very powerful.

"I likened it to the enormous amount of mail expressing huge sympathy that we received in the days, weeks and months following our loss.

"Proportionately a very high total of that total came from the island of Ireland," he said.

    Colin Parry OBE
    @ColinParryPeace
I’m saddened to hear of the death of Dolores O’Riordan at just 46. Her wonderful band recorded a moving song after the Warrington bomb in memory of two innocent victims, Johnathan Ball and my son Tim. RIP Dolores
"It was a shock that a lady so young should die so unexpectedly," he added.

The musician from Limerick, led the band to international success in the 90s.

A statement from her publicist said: "The lead singer with the Irish band The Cranberries was in London for a short recording session.

"No further details are available at this time."

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said the police were called to a hotel in Park Lane at 09:05 GMT on Monday, where "a woman in her mid-40s" was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are not treating the death as suspicious.

The tragedy in England that inspired Zombie

"This song's our cry against man's inhumanity to man; and man's inhumanity to child." - Dolores O'Riordan.

After The Cranberries' debut album, people thought they had the band sussed out. The Limerick band were part of the Celtic rock tradition, their shimmering, sorrowful ballads brought to life by Dolores O'Riordan's bell-clear vocals.

    Zombie shattered that illusion.

A seething condemnation of the IRA, it was backed by pummelling, distorted guitars while O'Riordan's lilt was contorted into a primal howl: "What's in your head Zombie? Zomb-ie-ey, ay-ey, ay-ey, aooowwwww."

Her pain was real: Zombie was a visceral response to the death of two children in an IRA bombing in the Cheshire town of Warrington.

Three-year-old Johnathan Ball was killed when two bombs hidden in litter bins detonated on a busy shopping street in March 1993. Tim Parry, aged 12, died five days later.

    Zombie, zombie, zombie-ie-ie, oh

    Another mother's breaking
    Heart is taking over
    When the violence causes silence
    We must be mistaken

    It's the same old theme
    Since 1916
In your head, in your head, they're still fighting
With their tanks, and their bombs
And their bombs, and their guns
In your head, in your head, they are dying

The song 'Zombie' meant a lot to me when I first moved to London due to the IRA terrorist attacks I've lived through.

It was scary because once I was inside a building in Central London and the police wouldn't let anyone onto the streets outside due to an IRA bomb threat in the immediate area.

I just curled into a ball away from the windows in the corridors for several hours whilst the roads were blocked and cordoned off from traffic being able to pass through while helicopters flew around above the area.

Businessmen carrying briefcases in the streets outside were told by the police to stay still and put their briefcases down on the floor while they were being examined in the cordoned-off streets outside.

Another time I was at Kings X station and everyone had to evacuate due to another IRA bomb threat inside the London tube station. I remember running up the escalators in a panic and everything felt like it was happening in slow-motion at the time.

Another time I felt the fragile floors of the Victorian house I was inside shake one evening ... the windows and ceiling rattled a lot and a loud noise made me think that thunder and lightening had hit the building. The large Canary Wharf IRA bomb had detonated in London's second financial district a few miles away from where I felt the effects of it. (I dread to think what it must've felt like for people who lived even closer to the bomb.)

Much of my childhood was spent fearing IRA terrorist attacks too, (8 IRA bombs detonated one day in my small hometown of Bournemouth once as the Conservative government held their annual party conference in the conservative town of Bournemouth each year.)

There was police walking around and holding large guns for several weeks after the 8 IRA terrorist bombs detonated in my small hometown on the southwest English coast... and local people wrote letters of complaint to the local newspaper about how distressing and frightening it was to be forced to see UK policeman walking around holding guns... as if we were living in an uncivilised war nation.

That's just the tip of the iceberg.

I'm all for a united Ireland... but I don't agree with the criminal murder of innocent people just to make a political statement to the UK government.

London has suffered with a lot of IRA bombs... a BBC news studio just 10 mins walk and two roads away from my home in West London was bombed by the IRA once... they bombed London's financial district.... bombed and killed several top UK politicians within the Conservative Party when many government members were staying at the Brighton Hotel on the south coast of England... and they nearly killed Thatcher (the Prime Minister) during the Brighton bombing... they bombed and took the face off the UK's top crown court (the Old Bailey in London,) for holding what the IRA deemed as 'political prisoners' inside the UK's top court ... they killed the Queen's cousin (Lord Mountbatten and his children in an IRA bomb on his private boat).... they planted bombs in Westminster's 10 Downing Street (the home of the UK Prime Minister and top government officials in London)... the IRA bombed the UK media, government, royalty, financial district... etc.... but the IRA also killed many innocent people too with the bombs in Manchester and Warrington, etc, who aren't connected to the government, media, and royalty.

Two of my paternal English uncles moved to live in Belfast during the mid to late 80's and during the height of the troubles in NI... and they still live in NI to this day and are happily married with children there.

I personally think NI should be reunited with the rest of Eire, and so do my parents. I strongly support a united Eire, but not terrorist attacks and the murder of children and innocent people who didn't vote for the government.

My father and his relatives and also my maternal grandmother were raised as Catholics when they were children, but all of my relatives are Atheists... religion causes a lot of divides.

Me and my sisters both love The Cranberries.... especially the song 'Zombie'.
