Romania names MEP Viorica Dancila as first female PM

President Iohannis reluctantly agrees to give ruling Social Democrats another chance.

European lawmaker Viorica Dancila has been named as Prime Minister-designate in Romania making her the country's third head of government in a year and its first female premier.

President Klaus Iohannis announced the appointment which still has to be approved by parliament.

It had been widely thought Iohannis might veto the Social Democrats' (PSD) pick to replace Mihai Tudose, who quit after falling out with powerful party leader Liviu Dragnea.

Dragnea is one of a number of ruling coalition members facing trial on graft charges, while the president has become an outspoken critic of the PSD's record on combating corruption. Dragnea denies any wrongdoing.

Iohannis however said it was clear that the Social Democrats have a majority in parliament and that after weighing up the arguments he decided to give them another chance and have named their proposal as premier.

Dancila's appointment comes after the PSD forced their own prime minister to quit after less than seven months in the job. Iohannis urged the party to start delivering on its electoral promises.

Not a big surprise though Romania is not a very progressive country in any aspect, or that's the image it has at least.
But I would like to see a female PM in Russia during my lifetime.

Nowadays in Romania is a big political fight between us, the normal romanians who want a Romania without corruption, poverty, and them, who want a Romania with corruption, mafia and poverty.

Ok, good to know. We don't know much about general situation in Romania, it only appears in the news when some scandal arises... I guess the same happens about Spain in Romania.
Good luck with the reformation, and btw, no spanish PM in history spoke english properly, or even unproperly. If they're able to speak spanish properly it's already a big thing.

Dude, trust me, this women is just a puppet of some oligarchs. This is not a progressive movement of the socialists, or a wannabe reformation of romanian politics by putting a women as PM. She is just a pathetic clown puppet, put in the from of the government, so Dragnea and his oligarchs can change the justice laws

Yes, but with better politicians it would be even faster. Those oligarchs idiots use the whole budget on salaries for budget employers and retirees, so they will be voted again and again.
Romania need investitions in infrastracture, growing the economy just by consumption will drive us at the same finish as Greece.
