I've heard of similar things happening among some white Cubans, Puerto Ricans, Brazilians, and Venezuelans.

The goddess in question is Yemanja.

This is like saying, omg large crowds of east asians worship buhdda. Buhdda was an nepalese or indian. Yorubans were sent there before so its not too suprising some remnant of their culture meshed with the population there. Many of those white latin americans have yoruban ancestors likely.

There's no ''white culture'' also. This is a mulatto identity invented by racist White Americans because they don't belong to any European national culture and cannot accept their rootless existence. Jesus was a Middle Easterner, the first priests of the Roman Church were North Africans (St. Augustine), many ''white'' European groups are Islamic etc.

All cultures are made of exchanges. There's nothing wrong with ''whites'' worshipping an African originated goddess.

Uruguay has a small afro uruguayan population. Its the most european nation in LATAM but it is also more sub saharan african than Argentina Chile or Paraguay. So it not really that surprising.

White Latin Americans should be worshipping that Europeanized white wash Jesus Christ, not an black African god. Again, white Latinos are culturally not white, they still hold on to indigenous and black elements in their traditions, gastronomy, accent, slang, music, dance etc
