Actually you're not entirely right and the notion of what is beauty varies deeply depending on the specific historical era that you are talking about. I've read Humberto Eco's On Beauty and On Ugliness and being obese was actually seen as something desirable in many historical periods, especially when famines were prevelant. Men who were naturally endomorph and could gain fat more easily had more chances of surviving during harsher times. It was also high status, you probably have noticed that some European kings are depicted as overweight men.
