Default The Bulgarian peoples refuse to accept the Istanbul Convention.

The Istanbul Convention which is a big fat assroll of feminist and gender bender bullshit has hit a rock trying to pass itself in Bulgaria.

The bills terms have caused massive outrage among citizens and organizations.

The Bulgarian Orthodox Church, not being useless for once, has threatened excommunication to any politician that votes in favor of the bill passing.

As of today voting and debate for the bill in the parliament has been put on hold.(for an unspecified time)

Father Dionysy Calls for the Excommunication From the Bulgarian Orthodox Church of Statesmen Who Vote in Favor of the Istanbul Convention

A prominent member of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, urged the government not to ratify the Istanbul convention as, according to him, it contradicts traditional Christian and Bulgarian values.

The Bulgarian Orthodox Church condemned the Istanbul Convention as a whole due to its definition of gender as a social construct and not a divine or biological one. In an interview with Nova TV, Fr. Dionysy stated that the Council of Ministers should be banned from entering any Bulgarian Orthodox churches if they refuse to withdraw the voting for the Istanbul Convention.

At the same time, the Bulgarian President Rumen Radev said that if the convention passes its parliamentary readings, he would put a veto on the decision. While the Young Conservatives Club is an openly right-wing project, the President was supported by the Bulgarian Socialist Party during the last election cycle. Conservative, patriotic and Christian values seem to unify people on both the left and the right when it comes to big decisions and changing policies and practices.

Absolute stupidity. The convention doesn't provide for gay marriages, but even if it did, it should have been ratified already. Lgbt rights are protected in the EU, and on EU level so the tendency is that the gay marriages would be legalized in Bulgaria too. Sooner or later. As always, we are lagging behind not only in other areas like economy, payments etc. but also on lgbt rights. We are already in the minority: out of 28 EU states, only 6 are not accepting the marriages. So Bulgaria should choose the principles of EU for respecting other peoples rights and legalize the marriages. That "macho" (latent homosexual in reality), backwardish position doesn't do us any favors, especially if we are holding the presidency of the Council of EU. And that stubborn, useless fixation on "moral values" is laughable and comparable to the Muslim countries, which are generally stuck in the Middle Ages. Only in the Muslim world there is a moral police for example. And European Court on Human Rights has established long ago in its legal practice that the social "moral" is changing with the times. As a whole, ones person "moral" is subjective category, not objective. If we are finding justification for the moral in the religion, then we should stick to the Bible where slavery is morally acceptable.
And the Bulgarian Orthodox Church has proven once again how useless and backwardish as an institution it is. Crying against the gays like its the worst tragedy of Bulgaria, when doing 0 for the poor and counting its money and dealing with lands etc. They have really lost it.
Hopefully the Convention would be ratified if Bulgaria wants to look like a respectable European country.

And of course I would immediately immigrate, because you have asked. Get over yourself. But posting here that "Bulgarian society" rejects the convention is misleading. At best the society is divided, the stupider part is riled up by nationalists who misrepresent the text of the Convention. Its a Convention against violence and its sickening it is not ratified while it has already been ratified in Turkey, Serbia, Albania. Obviously there are forces working against the European ideas and principles, but what is the alternative to EU for Bulgaria really? There is none. If we want to get civilised and richer and more prosperous and more tolerant we have to start looking more like Germany, France, Sweden, Finland etc. As I said unfortunately we are lagging behind on so many EU topics and its striking that some Bulgarians are proud of this backwardness.

    second, respectable European country???

France is miles better compared to Bulgaria. Or to most of the countries in Europe. Have u been there? Its striking how many Bulgarians live and work in Europe and how little influenced are they by the more developed societies.

What does that mean? To remain stuck in the Middle Ages? Because it is stuck there, remaining very "orthodox".

Bulgaria government never ratified it, so we don't need any saving from it, we are saved.

But congratulations to Turkey for leaving.
