‘No longer able to clarify fates’: 1.3 million Germans still missing after WWII

Even today, nobody knows what happened to around 1.3 million Germans who went missing during the Second World War. The head of the organization that tries to find them admitted recently that their fates will never be cleared up.

“We will no longer be able to clarify these fates," said Thomas Huber, head of the Tracing Service which belongs to the German Red Cross, told the German Press Agency (DPA) in a report published on Tuesday.

A lot of them ended up in America and South America. They did not want to be found.

Do they have a list of these people by name, surname etc.? Or is it just a guesstimate? In case of MIA (Vermisste) soldiers, they should have been reclassified as KIA (Gefallene). These are usually deads whose bodies were never found (or body could entirely disintegrate from explosion, etc.).

Many finished in Spain, hidden. Mostly in cities in the coast, Alicante and some villages.

Yep, as well as many of the Italians, Ukrainians, French, etc that served in the Shutzstaffel. Many lived under false names. I remember a story about this old ass Waffen SS vet who was 96, living here in America, and Israel wanted him to stand trial for crimes he committed back in the 40s.

I never had the chance to meet my great-grandpa, though I wish I could've. These men werent stupid. They were extremely intelligent and talented men. I did, however, watch a documentary with him in it, and thats the closest I ever had to a relationship with him lol. Cool stories though.
