Well, people from authoritarian regimes are still less developed than people from societies where critical thinking is encouraged. I also notice that people from authoritarian regimes often boast about images of Potemkin villages and pride themselves with just that. It's very shallow and transparent to any outsider it looks fishy at the least.

That being said, the West isn't truly a democratic society, more particratic which likes to keep up the pretence of choice. However, it does offer as of today, the most critical thought in society. This is prone to change, but it's how it is today (and still is; more than ever even thanks to social media).
