As far as i know it was te other way around. The original Buddhism of Buddha was like a pantheist religion. It later developed in a more philosophical way when Bodhidharma went to the Shaolin temple in China and created the Zen Buddhism, the Zen Buddhism is by far the most philosophical of the Buddhist branches and it is heavily influenced by Taoism.

Perhaps, the 4 Noble Truths, and the Eightfold Path of the Middle Way are based upon a theologically religious foundation. They're an integral part of the Sutras (sacred writings), and are at the foundation of Zen Practice.

Interesting. Do you think the Zen is religious? Maybe it also is religious but not as religious as other brances, still.

I think Buddhism is both Philosophical and Religious...which is great, BTW!! However, I do not like at all its totally anti-natural, nihilistic attitude towards Life!... At least for what concerns its "Theravada" or Hinayana" variety. I much prefer Vedic Hinduism, which is much more positive and Life-affirming!
