Due to the war in Yugoslavia, the word Balkan was used in the 90s in the news too much, and they always said "the Balkan war", the news in the West, I think they did a lot of damage to this denomination, but thanks to the internet, There are now many groups that are giving a new life, even I follow some on instagram called "squatting slavs", with a little humor, you can change this negative image that the TV gave in the West for years

It's not derogatory, but it's definitely a term without many redeeming qualities attached to it.

For me, it describes a specific region of Europe. No different to the Iberian peninsula, the British Isles or Scandinavia etc.

Balkan- Mentioned for the first time by Ung. source in the 12th century (Prof. Iv. Dobrev). Similar tokens are found in Chagat. Balkan "mountain range in Central Asia" in the combinations Böjük В., Küčük В, kalm балhн/Balkan high coast, most likely related to Scythian-Sarmatian: for comparison oset.уæллагон/uellagon "Upper" (> mountain> mountain). Kazakh барқын / Barkin Sand Hill', Sib.-Tat. The parganas "rolling hill in the steppe" are rather derivatives of turk. verb * bar- "I'm coming". but in Turkish the word for mountain is different - dağ The Balkans can mean from the Turkic word "Bol" meaning rich, fertile, generous, inexhaustible and " khan" - Master, Lord"
