If Finland would have stayed apart of Sweden year 1807... (like 700 years before that) ... all the way to present days. The area would be ''western''.

If Finland would have stayed autonomy part of Russia from year 1807 to present days => the area would be ''eastern''. Especially as Stalin/communits would have destroyed that autonomy position and Finns identity.

But Finland became Independence the 6th of December 1917... and have stayed independence since then. They have created ''very western norm'' country in 100 years time (no matter the criterion) .... just because that is what all Finns wants to be (and have wanted to be). Simple as that.

Socio-economically ? No.
Geographically ? Yes.
Genetically ? Yes.

So much more not than yes. Nobody consider Finland eastern Europe, they're nordic and northern European even if they aren't Scandinavian.

Great? Yes. Modern history does not know many...

If some 240million nation attacks against 4,5million nation...already the result that Finland never became occupied in WW 2 time (like so many European country) was more than can be asked.

In Stalin's plans Winter War was over in 2-3 weeks (estimated time to occupy whole Finland)....still border line stayed about the same after 3months (12 weeks) war. Not to taking about 3years and 3months Continuation War.

No matter of Stalin's plans: Ryssarna kom aldrig längre än 15 mil in i Finland!
