Why are white people expats while other races are immigrants?

Originally Expat as it can be guessed from it's name was reserved for people who left own country not due to will, but due to external pressure, while migrant is a person, who migrated willingly.

Nowdays it's more about status. Immigrants being low-class and expats upper class.

It depends on the quality of immigration, not race. Anyone who's moving from a poor shithole to 1st world is an immigrant while if there is no significant difference or immigrated country is poorer than it's expatry.

If someone has high education, comes from a poor shithole but has a well paying job and fits among other expats, doesn't live in closed ethnic communities than such person could also be considered expat.

To me expats are usually semi or retired and they move to the Caribbean or Florida (Germans and Brazilians do this) full time or part time.
USA citizens do a lot of this also, various resort type areas of Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, but there are a lot of Americans in the UK, Germany, Philippines and of course Israel.

One difference - which has nothing to do with skin color otherwise you wouldn't find Asian & African expats - is expats still pay taxes to our home countries as if still residing there. The majority of immigrants don't actually pay taxes to their governments and no sending money back just to family isn't the same thing.

One reason why it may seem expats are majority white is because the term is often given to professionals and/or well-off individuals who are only in a location for a temporary time period - e.g. work contract - and such expats have no intentions of staying permanently. Immigrants/migrants on the other hand may intend to remain in the other country until death.

Theres no difference. Immigration just has a more controversial tone to it because its used more often dealing with border and migration issues. Expat is not as direct as calling someone an immigrant.

When brown people go to white people's countries, they are "immigrants".

Examples:

- American moves to Japan to teach English... "expat".

- British couple retires in south of France... "expat".

- Indian software engineer moves to Germany ... "immigrant".

- Iraqi doctor moves to the US ... "immigrant".
