Soccer/Football requires more actual skill, Rugby could be played by anyone who is basically of a strong stocky build and can handle some rough play.
These days most pro Rugby players are probably juiced to the gills.

I prefer to use the American term of 'soccer' for the English sport of football (as it's a sport I absolutely loathe and can't stand and I try to distance myself from it and from crowds of rowdy football fans as much as possible,) and so that the term 'football' is not confused with the more exciting and impressive game of American Football (which stems from the English game of rugby.)

It's one of those Americanisms I've adopted, such as calling football as 'soccer', and saying 9/11 instead of 11/9, using American terms like 'awesome' a lot, etc... although I've not got around to adjusting from traditional European English spellings to using American English spellings yet.

I don't watch any sports, but from the video clips I've seen showing the highlights of games... I personally think that rugby and American Football and boxing and wrestling are manlier sports than soccer. That's just my view though.... others may see it differently.

I also think that soccer players are extremely overpaid, greedy, and over-rated, compared to the real-life heroes such as brave fire-fighters, paramedics, coastal lifeguards, etc.

Rugby is by far more physically violent than soccer.

However American Football is even more physically violent than both rugby and soccer.

It's interesting how many Europeans now use that term. On this site alone, I've seen Brits and Italians using soccer instead of football. It's no longer just an American term

Also there's some other words that people mistake as being 'Americanisms' (such as 'diaper' for nappy, 'garbage' and 'trash' for rubbish, 'loan' as a verb instead of lend,) but these words were commonly and historically used in Shakespearean England, and more people across the British Isles had rhotic accents too during Shakespeare's era. (Nowadays rhotic accents are heard mostly in the West Country of England, Ireland, America and Canada.)
