"Chosen" is another element of creating a common identity just like religion, romantic nationalism, practices that change physical attributes - circumcision, cranial deformation to name a few and symbolic rituals (baptizing). All these create an illusion of uniqueness and bring people together serving as societal glues for more efficient ruling, subordination and wars.
