Irish are a NW Euro population as people have been saying above, they're closest to Dutch, other British Islanders, North Germans and Scandinavians. I strongly question to legitimacy of Celtic identity outside of Ireland, Wales, Brittany, Scotland, Cornwall and the Isle of Man (The 6 modern Celtic nations). No other regions have a surviving Celtic language and their identification with the Celts is due largely to very recent ideological developments.

Also yes, Spaniards likely do have significant ancestry from the Italian peninsula, especially considering the new paper stating that Iron Age Iberians were Basque-like (Iberian Beakers were Basque like as well so there is nothing Celtic about the Basque genetic structure as it predates Celtic presence in Iberia), meaning other Iberians have experienced an eastern shift which can be modelled as Tuscan-like:

Looks like I was right about significant Roman ancestry in modern Spaniards and Portuguese, and with pre-Roman Iberians being like contemporary Basques. It makes complete sense considering Andalusia the centre of Roman settlement scored the highest Tuscan related ancestry on the mainland in nMonte runs, followed by neighbouring Extremadura and Murcia.


Also interesting how North African gene flow seems to have been occurring since the Bronze Age, so not all of it came with Islamic conquests...
