Bulgaria's Government Sends Financial Support for Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum

Sofia, Bulgaria - The National Assembly in Bulgaria decided to send €15,000 in support for the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum, the site of the notorious concentration and extermination camps. The gesture commemorates the 75 anniversary of the Rescue of the Bulgarian Jews during WW2.

Many countries decided to contribute to the project of keeping the memory of Auschwitz so it’s not forgotten, among them Israel, Germany, Russia, the United States, France, the UK, Poland, Belgium, Italy, and many more. The overall sum collected is reportedly around €120 million.

The Bulgarian government pointed out that fighting antisemitism and bigotry were among their top priorities during the presidency of the European Union.

For those that may not be familiar with the history of the Rescue of the Bulgarian Jews, during WW2 Bulgarian politicians, public figures, and the Bulgarian Orthodox Church devised a plan to prevent the sending of the country’s Jewish population to the Nazi concentration camps. The deportation was going to take place on March 10, 1943, almost 75 years ago.
