Software Suggestions

I'm able to get the following software free through my university. Any suggestions on what's worth grabbing before I transfer? For instance, as someone trying to learn to program as a hobby, is Visual Studio worth getting?



I know most people just pirate the shit, but I really don't like to, so this is a pretty cool opportunity.

Other than that, any free software suggestions (like an alternative to MS Office that isn't OpenOffice.org)?

It's cool. OpenOffice is good; it just seems kinda bogged down.

For me Visual Studio 2010 for free it's a no brainer (new C++ standard, F#, etc...) . Indeed free alternatives could bring good compiling, but medium or large projects require a good IDE, an VS has no rival for what I know.

And same could tell about MSOffice, about Windows Seven(and Vista, And XP...), in fact KDE desktops looks cheap and nasty.

I know I could sound a little biased, anyse I hope it helps.
