He could pass for Apulian actually. Apulians are South-East Italians. Once I took a ferry boat with my class and a class of Apulian guys and they had a strange look, I mean, different from the look I am used to. Anyway Puglia is a big region and probably the look varies a bit from province to province.
I know that some tribes that once arrived to Apulia came from the Balkans and some texts identify Apulians with a South-Eastern European people rather than with a South-Western one.
So your theory can go.
I could not identify him as a typical Calabrese/Sicilian anyway.
Ps: especially in the second pic he does remember me a guy I saw on the ferry boat. I don't remember from which province they were. First thing I thought looking those Apulians, I oath it, is that they looked Balkanians.
