In sport, what is more important: strength-in-depth or world-class players?

This might at first glance seem a rather counterintuitive, oxymoronic and bizarre question, so let me explain. In Wales, there is the general feeling that the first-choice rugby team is mostly a lot less good than 5-10 years ago. On the other hand, there is arguably in many ways more strength-in-depth now than there was back then, in the sense that the gap in quality between first, second and third-choice players is nowadays somewhat smaller. Therefore, what is overall more important?

Strength-in-depth in general is more important in sports.
For instance, Argentinian national football team has some really good players but fails to win a World Cup for a long time now because of lacking enough resources and team play.
