I think the demonization of Islam came at the end of the 1970's when Iran's Islamic revolution happened. You can see that the seccular Saddam was supported by both Soviets and the West but also by Saudis in the Irak-Iran war. When Communism fell and the strategy of tension Europe had adopted during the cold war (various communist terrorist groups commiting attacks) couldn't logically be kept without the commies, so Islamists were made the main enemy and Saudis happily took the role of main center of influence for islamists.

Its very sad to see how far things have gone, when the US literally is allied to a state that promoted the same terrorism that they are supposedly against. I guess its sorta like a positive feedback loop: Launch a "War on terrorism" to rally support, allow these same terrorists (Tsarnaevs for instance why did US intelligence just casually allow them continue their attack on people even though the Russian government warned them YEARS ago) to cause mass terror in your population, and then reap the rewards of a populace constantly bombarded with gloom and doom media.

You're quite right in claiming that neo-liberals in Western governments have attempted to 'manage' Islamists for their own gain.

However, you ignore the following facts:

a) People throughout the Islamic world vote for Islamist political parties
b) People throughout the Islamic world are generally very religious
c) People throughout the Islamic world adhere to a faith that has hostility to non-adherents as a central, founding tenet

You also seem to believe that the Western world was ignorant of Islam and its history prior to 1970, despite the fact its attempted conquests of Europe and its subjugation of Europeans' religious kin in West Asia and North Africa had been a source of consternation, fear and anger for 1,300 years before that.

Are you seriously trying to convince us that Muslims aren't really Muslim? That their faith doesn't extend beyond a few family celebrations when it's Ramadan/Eid? That they don't read religious texts that tell them to slaughter anyone who questions whether their Prophet rode into Heaven on a flying donkey?
