Default Castele din Romānia (Castles of Romania)

    English:
The castle was originally a medieval construction used to house, but also to protect a noble family and to symbolise their authority in their feudal domain. The first castles were made of wood, often times on a natural or artificial peak, then they were made of stone in order to be more resilient to the new weapons and war tactics. These constructions were called fortified castles or citadels.

In the Renaissance, with the technological advancement of artillery, the kings of France have decided not to build castles for defence, but to focus on comfort and pleasure. At the same time, the fortified castles were modified and redesigned to offer an increased comfort. The example of the French monarchs was quickly followed by the entire European nobility.

The former residence of Count Mercy was built between 1733 and 1734, meaning it’s one of the oldest buildings in Banat. The craftsmen were of Italian origin and were part of the colonists that have settled in Banat, more exactly around the castle, in Carani.

Domeniul a reintrat in proprietatea familiei, fiind rascumparat de Andrei Mocioni. In 1880, domeniul Foeni a fost lasat sotiei si altor urmasi.
The Mocioni family castle in Foeni was built in 1812, being an impressive residence. During the Revolution of 1848, Hungarians have devastated the Foeni domain, causing immense damage. The estate became the property of the family again, being bought by Andrei Mocioni. In 1869, he withdrew from the political life, spending his last years here with his wife, Laura Cernovici, and father-in-law, Baron Petru Cernovici. In 1880, the Foeni domain was left to his wife and other successors. After the 90s, a grandson of Mocioni, Antoniu, rebought the castle and arranged the House of Culture here.

Rudna village was once Baron Nicolici’s “kingdom”. The castle, built in the 19th century, became, around 1946, a promenade house, then a subunit of the Frontier, and in the 60s, after the nationalisation, CAP headquarters. After 1989, the castle was looted: doors, windows, flooring, furniture – all gone. The heirs of the last owner reclaimed the castle. They received it, but they weren’t interested by its fate, so a few years ago they sold it to a woman from Germany.

At the end of the 18th century, many Macedo-Romanian and Greek families settled in Banat, among which were the Nacu brothers, renamed Nakó after they converted to Catholicism and got magyarised. They bought the castle from Sānnicolau Mare at an auction in 1781. Their heir, Nakó Kįlmįn, began the construction of the castle in 1864, which quickly became the centre of the town’s cultural and political activities.
