Americans actually mostly see France favorably (73% 5th place gallup 2013). Ahead of France were: Canada, UK, Germany, Japan.
But like every one there are stereotypes.

The Napoleonic wars were France's best performance, yes, but Napoleon was Italian.
France got schlonged by Germany 3 times in 70 years, even if other countries like America eventually bailed them out.

I'm not thrilled with the French political climate. But then, I haven't trusted our (American) government in many moons either... Frankly, I think all contemporary governments are corrupt.
As for French people. I'm not too keen on their culture. But I married a lady who is 1/3 French... And Ooh, la,la.
