    Default Istro-Romanians

Istro-Romanians are a small and dwindling ethnic group in the peninsula of Istria, Croatia, who speak what is thought of as a dialect that broke off Romanian several hundred years ago, and became its own language in a way. Based on their speech and customs, they are thought to be an offshoot of 15th century migrants from Transylvania. Unlike other Balkan Vlachs like Aromanians and Megleno-Romanians, who were always from south of the Danube and whose language has a somewhat more distant common root with Romanian from 1000 years ago, Istro-Romanian is certainly an offshoot of Daco-Romanian that later migrated to the region. The language only has a few hundred speakers left today. I can understand some of it but it's become corrupted heavily by Serbo-Croatian influences over time. Still interesting though.

Istro-Romanians are from Transylvania. Great people, they live in my region. They are known to be quite temperamental, and elders do speak language in their villages which are in mountains. Lot has been done recently to preserve their language, I think there is a dictonary or two published so far.

Regarding phenotype, they look very local, natural trough centuries of mixing.

They aren't really Romanians at all but descendants of Roman-speakers who didn't get Slavic. Or Venetians at least.

^Haha I was gonna say, that sounded like a typical Apricity type comment... No they're definitely not that. Why do people keep trying to make their own theories for things? It's like every time other Vlachs are mentioned people try to distance them as much as they can from Romania lol. As I said, I could understand that a bit more in the case of Aromanians, but these are different.

Maybe you're thinking of the Istriot people, another small local Romance language which is closer to Venetian or Friulian, but even they are likely Romanized natives mostly.

Many of these people do have a somewhat local flair to them after all the time that's passed, which is natural. But you have to consider that the area they came from in Transylvania was also a pretty strongly Dinarid region as well. They could pretty much all fit there without a problem. They've been where they are for several centuries less than gypsies have been in Europe, and Roma are still distinct for the most part even though they blended or mixed with others to an extent too.

Anyway they probably won't be a separate ethnicity for long and will full blend into or integrate into the larger host population. It's a bit sad but that's the way of the world.

I've heard theories some had that Nikola Tesla may have been of this origin. But I don't know how they'd prove that.

    Very interesting! Mersi frate.

I did not know much about the history of this long lost group. I can only understand some of their speech, by now. I hope the culture will not be completely erased.
