Since the nationality didn't exist, In my opinion, there lived the tribal descedants of the tribes Serbs and Croats, who would certainly develope in one independent christian nationality (Bosnians, Bosniaks however), but the Turks stopped it, and now the Bosniaks represent every islamized South Slavic ethnicity.

If you would be born in tribe named Serbs how would you call yourself?

Perhaps "the member of the Serb tribe". I don't think the people at this time said for themselves: "Mi smo Srbi" , "Ja sam Srbin".

I think they were saying "I am Serb".
That is simpler to say then "member of a tribe blabla" which sounds too much official even today. People didn't make things complicated back then.

Yes, but also the Serb is ethnonym for nationality. But anyways, it will remain mystery. Perhaps it's just given name of Roman's, becouse this Slavic tribe lived near Iranian one and they just called them with this name. As i said.... it will remain as mystery.

I think they always knew who they are but Kosovo battle probably had additional influence to rise feeling of national unity.

That is made up Slavic adjusted etymology. What happened to now widely accepted Hunnic personal names of Turkic origin and Turkic civilizational impact on Kievan Rus polity, will just as well materialize in the form scholarly consensus concerning ethnonym Serb in the coming decades.

Your exoethnonym is either straightforward adoption based elite dominance (Mongolic Xianbei, Serbi - Avars, vassals of Turkic Xiongnu - Huns), or a slavic substitution of a similar sounding Altaic tribal name as was case with some Hunnic personal names - again based on elite dominance.
