    Italy and France culturally.

China and Japan phenotypically -- though, I will add, northern and north-central Italians look very similar to the French, and many French have Italian ancestry in the southeast, some parts of modern France are historically more aligned with Italy (Nice, Corsica, etc).

    Both culturally and phenotypically?

Do you think France and Italy are culturally more different than China (a very big country) and Japan?

It's no comparison. Japan and China do not eat the same food, do not speak related languages, and China is too diverse. Italy and France have had far more recent influence on one another than have China and Japan.

That is interesting to me. I can say I think culturally, Italy (at least everything from Rome northward) is closer to France than to Spain.

Italy and France are close like China and Japan in same proportion to me.Culturally, France and Italy, and ethnically - Japan and China. But China has a lot of minorities than Japan (Ainus). When you put China here, I consider only Hans Chinese.
Italy and France - Catholics and Muslins.
Japan and China - Confucio and Buda influences.Japan have Xinto what create differences in relation with China.
