North has been inspired by Scotland (and Wall by Hadrian wall in Roman times), Stormlands by Germany (forested like ancient Germania), Iron Islands by Vikings, and Dorne by Moorish Spain.
City like Braavos is obvious homage to Venice, Dothrakis are inspired by Huns/Mongols , Slavers Bay and cities like Quarth by oriental words.
The Reach is France, rich, fertile and big, full of flowers and romantic Knights.
Westernlands and pragmatic Lannisters are obvious homage to England, smaller region yet politically controlling the rest. Often raided by Iron Islanders just like Vikings did raid medieval England.

Just because it is the location used for filming doesn't mean Kings Landing is in Croatia.
