Default A population genomic history of the Eurasian steppe

A new paper on Eurasia is coming out soon
    Description

The Eurasian steppe, stretching about 8000 kilometres from Hungary and Romania in the west to Mongolia and western China in the east, is culturally among the most dynamic areas in the world. In the past four millennia, it has been variously dominated by Iranian-, Turkic- and Mongolic-speaking groups, and its temperate grasslands have been a crossroad for extensive movements of peoples, goods, and ideas between Europe, Siberia, South and East Asia. In order to understand the genetic history of the Eurasian steppe populations, we have sequenced 137 ancient genomes (~1X average coverage) spanning a 4000 years time series. We also genotyped 502 individuals from 16 contemporary self-reported ethnicities. We find evidence of a highly dynamic population history; the Iranian-speaking Scythians that dominated the Eurasian steppe throughout the Iron Age (~1 millennium BCE to common era) emerged following admixture between Late Bronze Age herders of western Eurasian descent and East Asian hunter-gatherers. The steppe nomads later further admixed with Turkic-speaking groups of East Asian ancestry that spread westward across the steppe in multiple waves: firstly, the Xiongnu confederations that emerged in Mongolia around the 3nd/2nd century BC; secondly, the Huns (4-5th century CE), infected with plague basal to the Justinian Y. pestis strain that destabilized the eastern Roman Empire in the 6th century CE; and thirdly during various short term dynasties, including the Mongol Empire of Genghis Khan and his descendants. These recent historical events transformed the Eurasian steppe populations from being Indo-European speakers of largely western Eurasian ancestry to the present-day Turkic-speaking groups, primarily of East Asian ancestry.

    Interesting!

Basically the central Steppe is a melting pot in varying percentages between Western and Eastern Eurasian ancestry. I always found it interesting that back in ancient times that some of these peoples had "Northern" affinities with Bronze Age Eastern and Central Europeans that basically got diluted by native Neolithic, Near-Eastern cultures and East-Asian ancestry.

Whereas Indo-European Steppe ancestry is best preserved within Eastern/Northeastern Europeans with negligent Neolithic admixture whom are the progenitors of this ancestry in a modern sense.
“The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.”

Two Steppe samples from the recent BMAC paper excavated in the Farghana Valley, Uzbekistan and dated 1200-1000 BC undoubtedly show that they were white

Interesting! Basically this Steppic sample is basically West Eurasian with a strong Northeastern/Northern European admixture with some Eastern Iranic/Caucasian/CHG shift. Assuming they are Indo-Iranian samples showing strong affinities to its Steppic roots before their gene pool shifted with the native Neolithic, BMAC culture.

I was wondering if you had Andronovo Culture samples? It would be very interesting to compare this with Corded Ware and Bell Beaker samples.

These results show that during the Bronze Age that all these groups such as Indo-Iranians, Balts, Celts, Slavs, Germanics, etc. before their prominent dispersals had a common origin in the Steppes before they mixed with other peoples when they brought Indo-European/Iranic languages, customs and ways of life with them that become an indisputable success worldwide that lives on today that makes them very influential peoples in that respect.

I think Bell Beakers originated in the western part of Corded Ware, they probably broke off early and headed West. There are still several areas of the Corded Ware that are unsampled, and might have R1b-L11. Like around the southwestern Baltic coast. Add to that the R1b-U106 sample from CWC/Battle Axe Sweden and it makes sense.

The best Beaker samples are basically modern Northwestern Europeans. i think most Europeans have remained roughly the same since the Bronze Age i.e. for over 4,000 years.

The locations of these samples are unknown, we need to wait for the paper to come out. The paper will be released around mid May.

Is it true that part of Eurasia up to small part of China
had IndoEuropean/Cauacasoid-(or maybe Iranian) people thousands years ago?

They had found red haired people in part of China.
And parts of Native Americans had WestEurasian ancestry (1/4 or 1/3)?
