There is a controversy between different schools of Hindu philosophy whether the soul (Jiva) merely emanates from God (Brahman) and can never realize identification with the Absolute, or whether the Self (Atman) is identical to the Absolute. One's personality (ahamkara, ego, lit. "I-ness") is obviously finite and limited, constrained by time, space, perception, subject to corporeal death, etc.

Buddhism goes one step further and denies the Self and the Absolute.

The idea that one is God is age-old philosophy dating back to the time of Descartes/Berkeley and their solipsistic theories. I believe these theories are also found in the Buddhist and Hindu religions. The idea is that subconsciously you are "IT", 'God' who subconsciously has these powers which are in fact unlimited but for the sake of sheer boredom chose a form of existence in which his powers were finite rather than infinite. A game for pure entertainment and adventure in other words, creating an individual personal existence in which things are not totally in control and where you're not really sure what's going to happen next; this crucially lets you play an active part in the video game. 'God' could have gotten bored being able to do whatever he likes with these omnipotent powers he has, so he channeled into a human being and then leveled up to Godlike stratum in due time after that. Actually Quantum Physics has also proven that nothing exists outside of our own perceptions.
