Modern Example: Under Assad people complained about lack of freedom to protest and dissent. Many were sympatizing at the idea of a "change of regime"
Little did they know that (momentarily)getting rid of Mr.Assad would have meant cessation of any form of civil life, being bombed , having your birthplace torn apart and occupied by sponsored terrorist.

I spoke with a Syrian guy, that although sympatized with protests against Assad, would have never imagined what happened in those 7 years of civil war. Life as he knew it , school , work would not exist anymore.

This logic applies not to all authoritarian rulers , but to some indeed.

Well not really. Religion was a private thing. Of course nobody were checking in your house do you celebrate religion holidays, but it wasn't publicaly allowed.
