Default Comparison of South Italians: Campanians vs Lucanians/Apulians -- GEDMatch results.

In general it appears the southwest of Italy (Campania, Calabria, Sicily) has more Near Eastern input than does Apulia, Abruzzo, or Lucania.

Some, but not all, Apulians are so northern shifted that they could be modeled as mainland Greeks.

    Apulia and Lucania:

I am unsure what ancient Greeks were like but it looks like Apulians are closer to MODERN mainland Greeks.

Southern Italy is closer to Greeks.... because they are Greeks.

Why are you amused by the fact that Greeks are close to Greeks?

Italians as a historical people never existed, Italy (as a region) was populated by Greeks, Celts, Etruscans (Lydians from Anatolia) etc..

Apulians also get Cypriots in all of their matches. How do you explain the affinity if not for common ancient Greek descent?

EDIT: A couple also have Lebanese turn up. I thought these areas were supposed to be like Mainland Greece?

I have trouble trusting Sikeliot for obvious reasons. People who have had DNA testing in south Italy are very few and I am sure that these individuals were born in America and have ancestors not only from Italy or, more likely, not only from the places indicated in this thread. I'd like to see their family tree.

So what are you accusing Sikeliot of doing?
And what data do you have to post on the subject that you deem legit and beyond repute?
Italian Americans up until relatively recently in the USA, were a very tight knit group and didn't intermarry often.

I have no reason to distrust Sikeliot's gedmatch posts. Regarding the family tree concern, that criticism can apply to anyone's kit, even if they were born in the place they purport to come from.

The only issue I have with Sikeliot is his denial of any ancient Greek ancestry in Cyprus. Of course I am Greek Cypriot and this is a bias I clearly have and openly admit. So when I see results like these from Apulia that do have Cypriots come up in their matches, I get frustrated with Sikeliot's argument. The only way I can feasibly account for these results is this:

    1) There is a common ancestry from mainland Greece that extends to South Italy and Cyprus. Since Sikeliot has argued Apulians are the closest to mainland Greeks in South Italy, the fact they match with Cypriots, regardless the distances, means something.

    OR

    2) The fact Lebanese also comes up means these areas are not identical to the mainland, and that Apulians have also received (or retained) ancestry from a population that is more comparable to the Levant than the Balkans. In that case, they are not good proxy for mainland Greece.

    OR

    3) Combination of the above
