I think Italy should reorganize into regions similar to these (more like the first map though). But it's probably too late to make such a radical change, and I'd imagine a lot of resistance to it.

It is quite difficult to reorganize Italy exactly into regions similar to these, those boundaries do not even coincide with the current linguistic boundaries.

The linguistic geography of Italy has its roots especially in the early and late medieval period. There are some exceptions, for example the province of Isernia coincides almost perfectly with the ancient settlements of the Pentri (Samnite people), south of the Puglia-Salento linguistic border you had the Messapians, etc.
