How to wipe the hard drive on a monitorless Gateway desktop tower

Depends on the operating system and it's configuration. Since you are not a Unix geek I would say probably not since you probably can't connect via a serial connection or OpenSSH. You probably don't have remote desktop set up in Windows either.

If your video card has an HDMI exit you can connect your pc to your tv, you only need an HDMI cable

I don't have a TV or HDMI cables. I'll see if I can get an electronic waste company to pick it up, preferably for some $.
