But look at the German-Americans of the Midwest (I live around a shitload of them). Their customs, food, and way of life is completely different. A lot of them were involved with Nazis in the 1930s, but the Pennsylvania Dutch weren't. Pennsylvania Dutch are a proud people, and really don't have much in common with the beer-swilling bratwurst munchers who came here later.

Different time, different region of Germany, different historical context, but they still speak an intelligible dialect of German. Each region of Germany has their own distinct history and traditions, but they work together. This confederation of distinct regions is what makes Germany one of the world's powerhouse economies.

Their languages are intelligible, but they are not the same people with the same history or traditions.
German-Americans don't usually like the Pennsylvania Dutch, and the Pennsylvania Dutch don't usually like German-Americans, whom we tend to see as drunken potato peasants.
