Favourite black&white movies

Never mind Ted Turner tinting the better part of them. Nothing beats a good old fashioned black-and-white movie. I realise that this isn't really a genre in and of itself but different genres have had their genesis during the time of black and white filmmaking.

In homage to Furtive Feline and our quick chatbox chat this evening and given that this is Oscar night (insert trademark thingie here), I thought a thread about some of our favourite black-and-white movies might be fun.

Here is one of mine:

The Petrified Forest. It also ranks as one of my all-time favourite movies.

Well I was really thinking about the era before colour. This was the filmmaker's choice to go b&w. But I'll allow it cuz you're nice and you'll not otherwise pollute my nice shiny new thread with ridiculous stuff now will you V?

In a way, I'm cheating, as Hitchcock chose to film it in black and white for budget and cinematic reasons. Still, black and whites were still being made in 1960, and it stands the test of time in a way that many don't. An absolute classic.
