The German-English relationship is hopelessly spoiled. The English are deeply hostile towards Germans at least since 1871 and two World Wars against each other have not made it better, to express it carefully. Germans don’t feel the same hostility towards the English (even Hitler’s ideal was a German-English alliance) but they meanwhile are aware of the English take on the relationship.

Well, to be fair, when it comes to American-German relations, it seems that the Americans who "hate" Germans usually see it in reverse; they presume that it's the Germans who hold them in contempt (and dislike them back). Perhaps Americans (begrudgingly) admire German inventions and craftmanship.
