Google's collaboration with art museums around the world produces a winning combination.
The Google Art Project has over one thousand artworks online gathered from art museums around the world.
Art lovers will truly enjoy this site - the many works online bring the art to you without needing to travel to each museum.
A bit about the project: all the artwork and galleries have been curated by the individual museums, with each museum deciding the number of galleries, what artwork, and what information to include.
The site can be explored with Google's Street View technology (choose Explore the museum from the menu) and using the Artwork view (choose View Artwork from the menu). You can also create your own collections. Here's a list of the museum's currently participating in the project:
- Alte Nationalgalerie, Berlin - Germany
- Freer Gallery of Art, Smithsonian, Washington DC - USA
- The Frick Collection, NYC - USA
- Gemäldegalerie, Berlin - Germany The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC - USA
- MoMA, The Museum of Modern Art, NYC - USA
- Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid - Spain
- Museo Thyssen - Bornemisza, Madrid - Spain
- Museum Kampa, Prague - Czech Republic
- National Gallery, London - UK
- Palace of Versailles - France
- Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam - The Netherlands
- The State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg - Russia
- State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow - Russia
- Tate Britain, London - UK
- Uffizi Gallery, Florence - Italy
- Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam - The Netherlands
Site navigation is fairly straightforward using directional arrows, drop down menus and side bars.
You can also visit the Art Project’s YouTube Channel.
All images on the site are copyright protected by the individual museums, and the site itself is subject to Google's Terms of Service.
It's an amazing collaboration, well worth a visit if you like artwork. It's easy to lose a lot of time at this site.
From time to time the site would load a bit slow while I was visiting. It could be site traffic, a slow connection where I am, or the high resolution images loading. If you're on a dial up connection I would visit the site to see how it loads for you.
You'll need a Flash enabled browser to view the site.
Art Project, powered by Google
Enjoy,
