I think they are more like the British of Asia, except they are more distant to other Asians than the British were because since their modernization, Japan had a western orientation. Japan, like the British, are an island nation, have historically had a unique existence and have a distinct identity from Mainland Asia.

There is no straight comparisons between Asia and Europe as they are very different regions historically and culturally. Historically, I would say the Northern Chinese are more like the Greeks/Romans and Germanics of Asia because they were the founders of civilization and also represented the highest cultures, not to mention they were considered the physical standard and are the tallest peoples in East Asia. But of course, due to Japan's early adaptation to the rise of the West, Japan has been well developed for many generations while China suffered the opposite fate and languished for over a century in chaos, backwardness and disastrous governance. However, China is developing rapidly today and have overtaken Japan in many industries, many regions of China are now beginning to match Japan in modernity and living standards, although on the whole, China's development standard still has a long way to go before reaching Japan's, which are among the highest in the world.

But London is still the technology capital of Europe, and Greece still has the longest lifespan of Europe. Not Germany. (And it's not the Germans who invented mega-structures like the Eurotunnel, the supersonic Concorde, the world's first complete bionic man, or who are inventing the supersonic Skylon for economic access into space and to transform the world of high-speed flights and aviation, etc. Prestigious Aston Martins and Rolls Royce engines are still hand-made in England.) The German military may match the Japanese. The Japanese are quite innovative though.

The English got the habit of drinking tea from China though. lol Even the word "Tea" comes from the Southeastern Chinese dialect of Fujian, where the word for tea is "The" instead of "Cha" in mandarin.

I don't think the German police and Angela Merkel did enough to discipline all those muslim refugees who raped a crowd of German females. I couldn't see the Japanese or Chinese tolerating that.

In terms of the very long Japanese lifespan, the closest match in Europe would be Greece.

Japan is an ageing population though and so is Italy.

In terms of expense, both London and Tokyo are amongst the world's most expensive cities to live in.

In terms being overpopulated, then the closest matches for overpopulated places in Europe would be England and Italy. (The population doubled here during the Victorian era which meant that many people lived in crammed and shared houses.)

The Japanese have the most extensive underground network in the world, followed by the London Underground network, (which is also the world's first, oldest and deepest underground network.)

Both are overcrowded as shown in this video comparing the London tube overcrowding problem that commuters also face in Tokyo.

I can see how the modern Japanese are comparable to the modern Germans actually, but I think they can also just as easily be compared to the British. Although, I don't think they have near the cultural influence the British have had on Western civilization, as far as their influence on the rest of East Asia.

Japanese are not disciplined, they just care a lot about what people think about them, so they stay as much time as possible at the work or school, to give that false impression of being hardworking. Actually, their productivity is deplorable and even a mechanical arm is more creative than this worthless robotic race. Trust me, i've worked with lots of them.

However, what I will I say this that both the Chinese and the Japanese have never really had much in the way of 'soft power', regardless of their economic or military prowess. In fact, I'd even argue that Pakistan and India have more soft power than they do, what with their films being so popular in many Asian and MENA countries.
