On Monday morning, 22 August, His Majesty the King of Norway’s Guard paid a very special visit to RZSS Edinburgh Zoo to bestow a unique honour upon our resident king penguin Sir Nils Olav. Already a knight, the most famous king penguin in the world was given the new title of “Brigadier Sir Nils Olav”.

Lasse Løkken Matberg aka Lasse Lom is a lieutenant in the Norwegian Navy working at NATO’s Joint Warfare Centre in Stavanger. In the army, he is a sports officer and recruit instructor, and in his private life, a social media influencer.

Among the thousands of NATO troops during exercise Trident Juncture in Norway, there was a platoon of Norwegian snipers. This piece profiles Senior Sergeant Stian from that platoon, as he reveals what kit he carries. In his bag is everything needed for a sniper to survive out in the cold for at least seven days. During Trident Juncture 18, around 50,000 personnel from 31 NATO Allies and partner countries tested their ability to operate together in NATO’s biggest exercise in recent years. Held in Norway, the exercise ran from 25 October until 7 November.

A scenic bus journey from Fauske to Narvik in Northern Norway. There is no train connection on this route. You have to go by bus instead. You reach Fauske by train from Trondheim. From Narvik you can continue by train to Abisko, Kiruna, Gällivare, Luleå and Stockholm.
