Either you can become part of their community or your Amish spouse can leave it and be shunned.
It's not really a good practice but it's one of the reasons their community is still going to this day.

Here are some pictures of the Amish and Amish country. Some of these are from my area, some of them are not. However, I can verify this is basically what it looks like in real life. I won't be including any photographs of them directly, as they consider it disrepectful and agains their religious values.

There are several accounts of the origins of faceless dolls used by Amish children. One account says that a young Amish girl was given a rag doll with a face for Christmas. Her father became upset and cut the head off the doll. He reportedly said "Only God can make people." He then replaced the head with a stuffed stocking that did not have a face. The little girl played happily with the doll for many years.[2] Some Amish children have wrapped blankets around small logs and pretended they were dolls.[3] A sociological study from 2007 says that the dolls are left faceless because "all are alike in the eyes of God", and that the lack of facial features agrees with the Bible's commandment against graven images.[4]

I remember once in sixth grade, we took a field trip out to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania to see the local Amish. That was pretty neat. I remember we got to tour a local house or something. I remember thinking the Amish girl who was giving the tour was really beautiful. No makeup or anything artificial like that. Very wholesome.

There's a bunch at a farmers market not far from where I live that sell Amish food and handmade crafts. Their food is excellent.

They strike me as friendly enough, but a bit odd, especially those goofy bowl haircuts on the guys. Some of the lasses are quite beautiful though.

Since I am anti-modern myself, I can respect their way of life to a certain degree.

I met two Amish people about 3 years ago in the French Quarter of New Orleans in the United States. They were a young couple, man and woman, that ran away from the Amish life up north in Pennsylvania and vowed never to return again as they preferred modern life and they said much of it was kept from them. They spoke English, but also very fluid, fluent German without a stutter or imperfections. I bought them a drink, chatted for a bit and wished them well as I left for a different scene.

It's interesting to me that their language is one of the only minorities languages in the US that is growing despite having no newly arrived immigrants to bring it with them.

They're nice people, I haven't dealt with them much - mostly just their Mennonite cousins.

We have quite a few here. I've spoken with many of various occasions and I think they're nothing but good people.

I have known many of them. They are crazy party people when they're young, a lot of them have facebook too (not just during Rummspringa). I know one who went on a drunken horse chase with the police... but they are pretty genuine, hardworking people for the most part. Just don't let their strict demeanor fool you, they are strict but they don't always follow their own rules. They're still human and do stupid stuff.

Also incest is a problem, I hope that gets straightened out soon.
