I worked retail at Kmart when I was younger I was not ashamed of that. I can understand getting pissed if someone taunts you but no one should be ashamed of their job unless it is really bad. Working is better than not working at all. I even respect someone working at McDonalds vs someone sitting home watching Jerry Springer.

    I like Shakespeare's quote better:

I really hate this question. It is ubiquitous in the US. I never understood why it is considered rude to ask someone how much $ they make, and yet it's perfectly acceptable to ask someone who you don't even know what they do for a living. Your job doesn't necessarily say anything about you. Whenever I would tell someone my college major and they would ask me, "What are you going to do with that?" I was always really tempted to say, "Your mom."

Well, there are a lot of worthless degrees that will not help people get jobs.

Not at all. On the contrary, it shows you take some interest in the person you meet. You can as well ask for how much money he/she makes.
But NEVER introduce yourself when not previously asked for with something like "Hello, I am in the insurance business and I earn EUR 500,000 yearly", you will pass for a poorly educated person and probably a liar.
